My sculptures are an in-depth study of archetypes and the
symbols used in communicating their relevance to our everyday lives. ARRIVAL
itself is a dynamic representation of a Cougar descending from the void
into our midst. The animal is caught mid-leap, the outside toes of his
right front paw just contacting the earth on one side of a ravine, bridged
by several fallen logs. His left leg is rising above and crossing the
right leg, while his body and rear legs are gathering for the thrust to
launch the continuing spiral descent. The shadow of this movement extends
down and to the viewer's left in a three dimensional echo to complete
the spiral and illuminate the environment connecting this sculpture to
us.
Within mythology, the study of the Cougar is a lesson on power in leadership,
or leading without insisting that others follow. The graceful leap of
a Cougar teaches the balance of power, intention, strength, and grace.
The arrival of the Mountain Lion signals that the time has come to stand
on your convictions and lead where your heart takes you. If others choose
to follow, a spiral of learning begins.
Mythologically, the cat is also a symbol of the spiral, while the spiral
represents the great creative force, death and rebirth, expansion and
contraction, all the cycles of our world. The spiral is also associated
with the labyrinth, or maze. The bronze representation of the Cougar's
spiraling arrival onto a stainless steel, shadow bridge is a symbol within
a symbol, a lesson on leadership through the maze.
